Book Review: Hoax for Hire
In the novel, Hoax for Hire, a twelve-year-old boy named Grayson McNeil wants a new life. Laura Martins describes Grayson as the younger brother who hates doing his illegal family job, hoaxing. Throughout the book, Grayson realizes that family comes first.
As a straight A student, Grayson McNeil wishes he could go to his dream photography school, Culver Academy. He wishes his life would not revolve around hoaxing. Grayson has hoaxed his whole life, faking legendary animals. Trying to find a new norm, Grayson and his older brother Curtis go to a bonfire while their dad and grandpa are doing a hoax in Scotland. At the bonfire, they realize that their dad and grandpa were captured by their hoaxing competition. Their competition also stole everything they had. Grayson always hated hoaxing, but he never meant for it to end this way. Before his guardians left, they had been working on a few hoaxes for good pay. Yet, to get the money, they would have to finish soon. Grayson books the ticket to Virginia and he and his brother go to save what matters most: their family. Grayson realizes his family cares for him, and he wants to show him he cares for them back.
I thought this book was pretty good! I didn't really know what to expect when I started reading the book...I had never heard of it, and was a bit skeptical at first! It ended up being pretty good though...the storyline was awesome, and the description was pretty good, but it didn't amaze me. To be honest, I don't really think I would read this book again, but it was definitely good! It had a great lesson in the end of it, too. Generally speaking, this book is only going to get a 4/5 from me! Science (more like animal history) comes up a lot in this book which, like I've said before, is not exactly my thing. It still got a four because of the other things I mentioned, and there were lots of plot twists, which I do like. Still a good book, it's just not for me.
